BIBLE VERSE EXPLAINED

Psalm 23 describes God as a shepherd who provides, leads and protects – even in the darkest valley. It has only six verses and is headed “A Psalm of David.” It is so well loved because it doesn’t describe a life without darkness, but company right in the middle of it.

Why a shepherd, of all things?

For people in ancient Israel, a shepherd wasn’t a romantic picture but everyday life. A shepherd looked for pasture and water, walked ahead, kept the flock together and defended it against wild animals. According to the biblical account, David himself kept his father’s sheep as a young man.

So when the psalm calls God a shepherd, it is saying: I don’t have to be my own provider. And I don’t have to go through this alone.

Verses 1 to 3: provided for and led

The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.

Psalm 23:1 (KJV)

The first verse is a statement of trust. “I shall not want” doesn’t mean getting everything you wish for. It means: what I truly need is in good hands.

He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.

Psalm 23:2 (KJV)

A good shepherd looks for places where the flock can eat and settle. For you, that might be a free evening, a walk, a prayer without a clock running. Rest in this psalm isn’t a luxury; it is part of being led.

He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

Psalm 23:3 (KJV)

To restore means to bring back to life, to give strength again. The paths of righteousness are the roads that truly hold. And “for his name's sake” means: God leads because that is who he is – not because you earned it.

Verse 4: the darkest valley

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

Psalm 23:4 (KJV)

Something quiet happens here. In verses 1 to 3, the psalmist talks about God as “he”. From verse 4 on, he talks to God as “thou”. Right at the darkest moment, description turns into prayer.

The psalm doesn’t promise there will be no dark valley. It says: you won’t walk through it alone. Rod and staff are often read as two shepherd’s tools – one to fend off danger, the other to guide and bring back. Protection and direction; both comfort.

Verses 5 and 6: a table set and a home

Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.

Psalm 23:5 (KJV)

The picture shifts from shepherd to host. In the ancient Near East, inviting someone to your table meant taking them under your protection. The enemies don’t vanish, but they don’t get the last word. Oil on the head and an overflowing cup are signs of honor and abundance.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.

Psalm 23:6 (KJV)

The psalm ends with a home. Goodness and mercy “follow” – almost like companions walking behind you. And the last words are “for ever”: not just for the good days.

Why Psalm 23 is prayed at funerals and in crisis

Psalm 23 is one of the texts read at many Christian funerals. Verse 4 takes fear seriously and answers it with a promise. And many read verse 6 as a look beyond this life.

People also pray this psalm in times of crisis, often by heart. It is short enough to memorize and honest enough not to sugarcoat anything. If you are walking through a dark valley right now and it feels like too much: you are allowed to get help. Reach out to someone you trust or a local helpline.

Frequently asked questions

Who wrote Psalm 23?

The psalm is headed “A Psalm of David.” That is why it is traditionally attributed to King David, who according to the Bible was a shepherd in his youth.

What do “rod and staff” mean?

They are a shepherd’s tools. They are usually understood as one for fending off attackers and one for guiding the flock. In the psalm they stand for God’s protection and guidance.

Is the verse numbering the same in German and English Bibles?

For Psalm 23, yes: the Luther Bible and the King James Version both count six verses, and the dark valley is verse 4 in both. In other psalms the numbering can differ by one verse.
