Source Channel · retold from Matthew 14:22–33

Jesus makes his disciples get into the ship and go before him to the other side. He himself stays behind until he has sent the multitudes away. Matthew tells what happens that night.
Alone on the Mountain, Alone on the Sea

Jesus goes up into a mountain by himself to pray. When evening comes, he is there alone. The ship is in the middle of the sea, tossed by the waves, for the wind is against them.
A Figure on the Water

In the fourth watch of the night Jesus comes to them, walking on the sea. The disciples see him, are troubled, and say: It is a spirit! They cry out for fear.
Straightaway Jesus speaks to them:
“Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid.”
– Matthew 14:27
Peter Steps Out

Peter answers: Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water. Jesus says: Come! Peter gets down out of the ship and walks on the water toward Jesus.
“But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me.”
– Matthew 14:30
“And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?”
– Matthew 14:31
They come into the ship, and the wind ceases. Those in the ship worship him and say: Of a truth thou art the Son of God!
What This Has to Do with You Today

Peter sees the wind and begins to sink. He cries out, and Jesus immediately stretches out his hand. If the waves seem bigger to you right now than anything else, you may cry out just like him: “Lord, save me.”
