BIBLE VERSE EXPLAINED

Matthew 6:33 says: when God comes first for you, you can trust him with the rest. “Seek ye first” means, in today’s words: look for God and his kingdom first, before you get lost in worry. The verse isn’t a success formula – it’s Jesus’ answer to the question of what really drives us.

What does Matthew 6:33 say?

But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

Matthew 6:33 (KJV)

The King James language sounds old, but it’s clear. “Seek” means to pursue something with everything you have. “First” means before anything else. And “added unto you” means given on top. So it’s about order – not about cutting everything else out.

What is the context of the verse?

Matthew 6:33 is part of the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5–7), Jesus’ best-known teaching. Just before it, Jesus talks about worry: about the birds that don’t sow and are still fed, and about the lilies of the field. His listeners were ordinary people for whom food and clothing were never a given.

Jesus doesn’t say these things don’t matter. Right before our verse he says:

for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.

Matthew 6:32 (KJV)

God knows what you need. So Matthew 6:33 isn’t a call to ignore your needs – it’s an invitation not to give them first place.

What do “the kingdom of God” and “his righteousness” mean?

By “the kingdom of God”, Jesus doesn’t mean a place on a map. He means God’s reign – wherever his will is done. That can start in a prayer, in an honest decision, or in the way you treat people.

“His righteousness” isn’t mainly about rules. It’s about being in a right relationship – with God and with others. If you seek that first, you don’t just ask “What’s in it for me?” but also “What’s right before God?”

What the verse doesn’t promise

Matthew 6:33 is sometimes read like a deal: God first, then wealth. The text doesn’t say that. In context, “all these things” refers to what the listeners were worried about: food, drink, clothing. The necessities, not luxury.

The verse doesn’t promise a life without problems either. In the very next sentence, Jesus says quite soberly that every day has its own burden:

Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.

Matthew 6:34 (KJV)

What does “first” look like in everyday life?

Priorities don’t show in big words but in small decisions. A few ideas for making “first” concrete:

  • Your first thought in the morning: Before you check your messages, say a short sentence to God. Even “Here I am” is enough.
  • When you decide: Next to “What do I want?”, also ask “What’s right before God?”
  • In your calendar: Block time for God before the week fills up – not just whatever is left over.
  • With money: Be generous before you’re sure it’s “enough”.
  • With worries: Name them and hand them over. For today, not for the whole year.

Nobody manages this every day. It’s not about perfection, it’s about direction. When you notice God has slipped to the back again, you can simply start over.

GOD First to wear: cap, shirt and experience

Sometimes a visible reminder helps. One side of the Fearless Summer GOD-First Cap is embroidered with “GOD First”, the other with “Fearless”. The S Source window sits on the front. The black wool-blend snapback has a structured front and a floral under-visor. Every time you put it on, two words sum up what Matthew 6:33 is about.

If you’d rather wear it as a shirt: the Fearless Lion Oversized Shirt has GOD on the front and the Fearless Lion with Source Mode on the back – 240 g/m² heavy cotton in black. The idea behind it: courage comes when you let God lead.

If you want to go deeper, take time for the God's Plan experience. It’s about exactly this question: what happens when God really comes first?

It means: look first for God and what matters to him. Everything else isn’t unimportant, but it comes second. The King James Version says “seek ye first”; modern translations often say “seek first”.

Will I get everything if I seek God first?

In context, the verse is about food, drink and clothing – the necessities. It isn’t a promise of wealth but an invitation to trust that God knows what you need.
