FAITH IN EVERYDAY LIFE
You can light a candle online for someone who has died: take a quiet moment, add their name, choose a candle and let it burn. It doesn’t replace a goodbye or a grave, but it gives your grief a place – even when the cemetery is far away or the grief arrives in the middle of the night.
Why a candle comforts
Candles have long been part of remembering: on graves, in churches, in windows. A flame says something we often have no words for. It says: you are not forgotten. And: I am still here, and I am thinking of you.
A candle asks nothing of you. You don’t have to know how to pray, explain anything or be strong. You can simply be there, with whatever is in you right now – sadness, gratitude, anger or emptiness.
What an online ritual can do – and what it can’t
A digital ritual is no substitute for the funeral, a visit to the grave or talking with people who are grieving with you. But it can be a bridge, for example:
- when you live far away and can’t get to the grave,
- on the anniversary of a death, a birthday or holidays that suddenly feel heavy,
- when grief catches you off guard on the train, at work or at night,
- when there is no place you can go to remember the person.
Sometimes it already helps to have a set moment to think of someone on purpose. A candle can be that moment.
How to light a candle online
The Light a candle experience takes you through the ritual in a few quiet steps:
- Who is this light for? Choose “For someone”.
- Name: Add the person’s name if you like. The field is optional.
- Your intention: Write a few words – a thank-you, a memory, something you still wanted to say. This is optional too, and it stays on your device.
- Choose a candle: There are different candles, for example “Comfort” for heavy days, “Stillness” for quiet moments or “Love” for the people you love.
- Receive the light: Before the candle burns, Jesus hands you his light. You press and hold until it reaches the candle.
Then your light is burning for that person. Take another moment afterwards. You don’t have to move on right away.
Finding words when none come
Many people sit in front of the empty field and don’t know what to write. That is normal. A few openings that can help:
- “Thank you for …”
- “What I miss about you is …”
- “Today I thought of you when …”
- “God, I place … in your hands.”
It doesn’t have to be beautifully put. A name on its own is enough.
What faith says in grief
When Jesus arrives in the village of his friend Lazarus after Lazarus has died, Lazarus’ sister Martha goes out to meet him. To her he says words that are still read at many Christian funerals today:
I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die.
John 11:25–26 (KJV)
A few verses later, at the grave, Jesus weeps himself. In this story, hope and tears stand right next to each other. You can be sad and still hope. And if all you can be right now is sad, that is allowed too.
You don’t go through this alone
Grief can feel like being completely alone with it. At Source Mode, the Jesus Presence print stands for the opposite: he is before you, behind you and in the middle of your life. The Jesus Presence Hoodie and the Jesus Presence Fluff Zip carry this design on the back. They don’t take grief away, but they can be a quiet reminder on the days you need one.
Maybe someone else is grieving with you: a sister, a friend, your family. You can light a separate candle for that person and send it to them. In times like these, a sign that says “I’m thinking of you” can mean more than many words.
And if grief overwhelms you and you don’t know how to go on: you are allowed to get help. Reach out to someone you trust or a local helpline.
